Those vertical elements aren't brick courses - they are the original plaster/lath furring strips, that still had yet to be removed. The lath had been on the furring strips for so long, it kind of indented itself into the wood. You can see the same type of situation going on at the ceiling joists.
As for the lintel/header, it is a solid wood member... pretty amazing actually.
